Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier at the Design Museum

Conceived and co-curated with Azzedine Alaïa prior to his death in November 2017, this spectacular exhibition puts on display some of the most iconic pieces of the master couturier, and explores the timeless beauty of his work.
Covering Monsieur Alaïa’s entire career from the early 80’s to his last creations, the exhibition also is a reflection on the designer’s personal approach, which defied the rules of fashion. At a time where designers have to follow a strict calendar and an increasing number of shows, Alaïa’s approach and freedom seem almost unbelievable, as he would work on certain pieces for years at a time, and only display them when ready, not when the fashion season dictated.
Beyond this freedom and commitment to his art, Azzedine Alaïa was recognised as a master couturier, who designed by draping and sculpting by hand on his models, meticulously cutting all his own patterns. His creations expressed beyond words the beauty of a woman’s form, magnifying the woman’s body through spectacular creations such as the zipped-all-around dress or the goddess-like bandage dress, the corset belt, not to mention his beyond-glamorous work on leather.
Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier is the first exhibition of Azzedine Alaïa in the UK. It will be on at the Design Museum until 7th October.
