Veronique Branquinho Pre-Spring 2017

Th fashion designer Veronique Branquinho is surely belonging to  that famous wave of hyper-talented, quietly subversive Belgian designers that defined the ’90s look. Her collections are recognizable at first sight with their recurring elements. Veronique Branquinho have managed throughout the seasons to create her own “silhouette”. Slender, willowy, a bit childish sometimes, but often paired with masculine, almost severe tailoring to break out with the combination of romantic trailing skirts swathed in capes and hoods conceal.

For the Resort 2017 Collection, Veronique Branquinho plays with duality.  “I like the contrast between modernity and vintage,” she said. “Austrian lace is lovely if opposed to denim, making it more soft and feminine. I love an eclectic spirit, mixing experimentation with historical references, clean lines with more elaborate ethnic motifs and volumes. The djellaba has a very modern shape, made of simple squares, rectangles, and triangles. It could be considered almost as the template for the contemporary sweater.”. The collection exudes a quiet and soft springtime feel. By creating  effortless chic silhouettes, featuring lightweight natural fabrics and subtle elaborate details, the collection reveals a contemporary sense of laid-back romance.

Veronique Branquinho also took references from the 19th Century  with men’s shirting to Watteau pleated pieces reminiscent of costume or stage dresses as well as preciously embroidered linen shifts. Translated into modern looks those elements give an easy, feminine flair to the collection. Still  the purity of the lines, the simple silhouettes, and the light volumes could not conceal the exquisite detailing such as three-dimensional origami ribbons.  Lines from Alice in Wonderland were added to some pieces as ornate embroideries on white linen shirt dresses.  The fashion designer explained her choice :“I find her so intriguing,” she said. “She’s so stubborn and free, so determined to go her own way.” .

Classics are being updated and some designs overtly play with style combinations, such as a sleeveless straight cotton shirt-dress merged with a cape; or hoods reminiscent of the Wonderland universe charaterizing the Resort Collection. The clothes sensuality also resides in the precise selection of qualitative materials: jacquard de coton, exquisite cotton lace, natural wood beads, lightweight supple denim, ultra-thin linen… ; and by the diversity of craft techniques being used, from pleating and embroidery to ancient sartorial details constructions. The Collection colours are relevant of Veronique Branquinho’s will to focus on the spring atmosphere : white, black, deep blue, beige, nothing too much. The silhouettes are complemented by studded leather, canvas and suede clogs.
